Out of the Closet
Out of the Closet builds a contemporary queer wardrobe from personal archives, friends’ outfits and research into the history of lesbian dress. Jeanne Milani brings together the lesbian scenes of 1920s Paris and Berlin with communities in the United States during the 1970s and 1980s. Knitwear, tailoring, deadstock and local resources allow these references to be reinterpreted rather than reproduced.
The collection connects collective history with personal experience to assert a queer elegance that is both wearable and expressive. Each silhouette extends stories of visibility, resistance and belonging while firmly locating them in the present.
