Prix Master Firmenich 2020 & prix HEAD x Who’s Next 2020

Firmenich, the world’s largest privately owned fragrance and flavour company, founded in Geneva in 1895, attributed the Master’s Firmenich Award 2020 for the first time. In addition to a prize money of CHF 10,000, it offers the two prize-winners (another first!) the opportunity to create the perfume that will accompany their collection. Sarah Bounab, who presented a ready-to-wear collection of retro-futuristic inspiration, and Lou Chartres with her original line of accessories on the theme of transport will both be able to add a new dimension to their collection by developing a perfume within the Geneva- based company that produces elixirs for the most prestigious fashion houses.

The two laureates also received the HEAD x Who’s Next Award 2020, which will see them showcase their collections in a personal space at the Who’s Next and Première Classe fashion shows in Paris.

Lou Chartres

Her bag collection won over the jury. Blending functionality and humour, Lou Chartres found a very personal solution to a contemporary problem by reconciling mobility and elegance. The bags are accessories designed for commuting – they allow you to take a nap but they are also good-looking. Lou Chartres has demonstrated great technical skills and has put forward a coherent universe with strong and humourous images. The jury was impressed by her innovative concept and by the quality of her work. They discovered a designer whose ideas will certainly intrigue and attract different audiences.

Sarah Bounab

Sarah Bounab

Thanks to a very personal approach, Sarah Bounab has managed to conjure a very contemporary universe through her collection, a retro-futuristic take on digital culture. Her collection pulses with energy and is perfectly in sync with our time. Her pieces were well-executed and she mastered material development and different techniques (embroidery, embellishements). Concerned about sustainability, she has worked with materials such as scrap metal that she used in accessories. She used PET for the shoe heels and curtains and recycled tablecloths which she turned into perfectly cut jackets. Her tailoring caught the jury’s attention for the precision of the pattern making and the strength of her silhouettes.

The Bachelor’s Bongénie Award 2020 went to Fatma Elshabbi, a BA graduate who showcased a collection inspired by her family origins. The award comes with a prize package worth CHF 5,000.

Fatma Elshabbi

Of Lybian origin, Fatma Elshabbi was inspired by nostalgia for her childhood home and Lybian family. She created her own prints, reworking the patterns of her grandmother’s scarves and the lush tapestries of interiors. She was nominated almost unanimously by the jury, who was touched by her collection’s poetry and sensitivity and the story she tells through it. Her choice of fabrics, which combines fluidity with rigid elements, was also highly praised.

prix HEAD x La Redoute 2020

The HEAD x La Redoute Award 2020 went to Céline Schmid for her MA collection, which was inspired by the imperfections and wear and tear of the clothes we love so much and are reluctant to part with. Thanks to this award, Schmid will have the opportunity to create a capsule collection for La Redoute which will be launched next autumn.

Céline Schmid

Céline Schmid was inspired by the imperfections of clothing and the wear and tear of worn clothes. She has exaggerated the wear, mimicking crumpled fabrics and deliberately deforming materials. Chosen by Sylvette Boutin-Lepers, head of Creative & Image Partnerships at La Redoute, to create a capsule collection sold on the La Redoute platform, she will have the opportunity to rework some of her pieces with a professional team. Her work was cited on numerous occasions by members of the jury.

prix HEAD x Eyes on Talents 2020
